Thursday, May 28, 2009: In a packed ballroom of the
Roosevelt Hotel, New York City (my hometown for the
first 25 years of my life), I had the privilege of
seeing the cover of my latest book, Don't
Sabotage Your Submission, projected on a giant screen. There it is, in the middle of the two other finalists competing for the Benjamin
Franklin Award™ in a large category encompassing
both poetry and literary criticism. Tension was high
(for me, at least!)
Then, a split second before the name of the winner
was announced, two book covers disappeared from the
screen, and the one in the center expanded so quickly
it seemed to rush toward the audience. The sensation
was similar to watching a 3-D movie in which a train
is hurtling straight at you. Notice the gigantic size
of the projected book cover in the next picture, dwarfing
yours truly. (Not hard to do when you're all of 5-feet-2.)
