Friday, May 29, 2009: Don't
Sabotage Your Submission also received ForeWord magazine's Bronze Medal for
Writing Book of the Year, placing third among five
finalists from an unknown number of entries. The
Book of the Year awards are national juried awards
established to increase the attention of librarians
and booksellers to the literary and graphic achievements
of independent publishers and their authors. ForeWord is the only review trade journal devoted exclusively
to books from independent houses.
Just before the awards presentation took place on
the opening day of Book Expo America, in the crowded,
noisy dining area of the Jacob Javits Convention Center, we had lunch with my very
best friend from high school, Beverly Steinhardt
Brown, and our newer friend, Elayne. (Why didn't
we think to take a picture?!)
Then Pat and I employed a forward-looking strategy
and arrived early for the ForeWord presentation to
be sure we'd find seats. Doing so enabled us to see,
live, two of the most inspiring, dynamic speakers
I've ever heard: Dr. Cornel West and Tavis Smiley.
Their just-released DVD was Stand: What Do You STAND For? Yes, BEA is not only for launching forthcoming
books, but for almost any intellectual property and
related industry peripherals.
